Johns Hopkins SAIS Rises in Foreign Policy Magazine Rankings
Over the past two decades, Foreign Policy magazine has published a reputational ranking of academic programs in international relations. Each time, IR professionals are asked to list the five best programs in the world for students who want to pursue careers similar to theirs.
In the latest ranking released July 30, generated with responses from three categories of IR experts—scholars, policymakers, and think tank staffers, master’s programs offered by the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) are ranked number two by all three groups of responders, up from number three in the last Foreign Policy survey. In addition, the school’s PhD program as a career path for those going into policy is also held in very high regard, ranked between number three and number five by the three groups of professionals.
“The Foreign Policy poll reflects that high regard foreign policy professionals have for SAIS graduates,” said SAIS Dean, James B. Steinberg. “For motivated students looking to make a difference in the world, the SAIS experience is a demonstrated path to achieve their career goals. The ranking is a tribute to our faculty, staff, students, plus alumni and supporters, working together to create our unique educational community.”
Students come to Johns Hopkins SAIS to acquire the skills, knowledge, and experiences they need to change the world. SAIS students are passionate about solving humanity’s biggest challenges, and they know their work must begin with a deep and nuanced understanding of the interconnected world through prisms such as development and sustainability, diplomacy and governance, economics and finance, security and strategy, and the intersection of policy and technology. SAIS prepares them to lead through cutting-edge coursework, on-the-ground experience applying theory to real-world problems, a faculty of renowned researchers and leaders in their fields, and an extensive network of an unmatched global reach—in Washington, D.C., Bologna, Italy, Nanjing, China, and beyond.

Johns Hopkins SAIS
For more than eight decades, students have come to the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) to learn from renowned faculty and distinguished policy practitioners, build their professional networks, and gain hands-on work experience.
The school was founded in 1943 by Paul H. Nitze and Christian A. Herter, statesmen who sought to prepare the next generation of leaders to meet the complex challenges the U.S. and the world would face following World War II. A distinguished faculty of scholars and policy experts developed an innovative curriculum that emphasized international politics, economics, and foreign languages. That program, combined with skills training and experiential learning, helped prepare students to make a difference in government, civil society, and the private sector. In 1955, SAIS established a campus in Bologna, Italy, and in 1986 the school initiated one of the first Western university programs in the People’s Republic of China in Nanjing.
Today, SAIS carries on this tradition, preparing students for the emerging challenges of the 21st century. Johns Hopkins SAIS alumni number more than 24,000+ graduates, a network of professionals working across the globe. From private-sector executives to entrepreneurs, leaders of nongovernmental organizations to ambassadors, and international media correspondents to energy consultants, SAIS alumni are defined by their innovative thinking, analytical approach, and policy expertise. They are leaders in their fields, lifelong students committed to the betterment of the world.
