Race, Class and Community: Democratizing Higher Education

Racial injustice and economic disparity continue to underlie many of the challenges facing people in underrepresented communities, according to speakers at a Johns Hopkins SAIS forum for Black History Month, "Race, Class and Community: Democratizing Higher Education."

Lani Guinier, the Bennett Boskey Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, and Penda Hair, Co-Founder and Co-Director of The Advancement Project, discussed growing disparity and contributing factors such as policing, voting access, incarceration, and the climate of higher education.

To achieve lasting change, Guinier and Hair emphasized the need to create and sustain a large-scale social movement with the power to impact political decisions and make them more reflective of the will of the American people.
