About the speaker:
Robert C. Lieberman took office as the 14th provost of The Johns Hopkins University on July 1, 2013. In this role, Dr. Lieberman is the chief academic officer and second-ranking member of the senior administration, responsible for promoting and coordinating the university’s teaching and research mission. He oversees the university’s nine schools as well as several interdisciplinary programs and academic centers.
Provost Lieberman previously served as interim dean of Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs and professor of political science and public affairs. He had been a faculty member at Columbia since 1994, becoming a department chair in 2007 and vice dean for academic affairs in 2009.
Provost Lieberman is a well-known scholar on issues of race and politics in America, social welfare policy, and the welfare state. A 1986 graduate of Yale University, he received his doctorate in political science from Harvard University in 1994. His first book, Shifting the Color Line: Race and the American Welfare State, won the 1999 Lionel Trilling Book Award for the best book by a Columbia faculty member, among other prizes. He has since published Shaping Race Policy: The United States in Comparative Perspective; co-edited a Johns Hopkins University Press title, Democratization in America: A Comparative-Historical Analysis; and co-edited a Russell Sage Foundation title, Beyond Discrimination: Racial Inequality in a Postracist Era. Most recently, Dr. Lieberman published an article in Foreign Affairs, “Racial Inequality After Racism: How Institutions Hold Back African Americans.”
Provost Lieberman’s recognitions include fellowships from the Russell Sage Foundation, the German Marshall Fund, and the American Philosophical Society.
