Leading graduate school in international affairs, with campus in Europe, establishes unique multi-disciplinary degree that analyses and assesses uncertainty in global markets to equip decision makers with cutting-edge intellectual and practical tools.”

October 6, 2015— The Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) is expanding its degree offerings at SAIS Europe, as officials announced the launch of a new Master of Arts in Global Risk. Efforts are underway to recruit the new degree program’s inaugural cohort based in the Bologna, Italy campus.

The 13-month program builds on core strengths of Johns Hopkins SAIS in multi-disciplinary analysis by introducing students to the broad array of concepts and tools from the social sciences that will allow them to undertake sophisticated global risk analysis on a variety of issues. The program is designed for both early-career and experienced professionals, including students with prior master’s degrees.

“Policymakers and nonprofit leaders commonly face an environment of uncertainty as they grapple with urgent challenges,” said Vali Nasr, dean of Johns Hopkins SAIS. “In creating a degree focused on international risk management, the school aims to develop leaders with quantitative expertise that can be applied in the policy areas driving international affairs in our time, including financial markets, international trade, migration and security, energy, and international peacekeeping. We are excited for the program’s potential to enhance risk management capabilities in corporate boardrooms, NGOs, and state houses worldwide.”

In addition to rigorous coursework, students in the Master of Arts in Global Risk program complete a 12-week external practicum project or an original thesis. In the practicum option, students apply their knowledge and skills by identifying and mitigating potential risks facing a company or organization.

“The Master of Arts in Global Risk offers a unique opportunity to gain both the theoretical framework and the practical tools for international careers in the management of uncertainty,” said Filippo Taddei, director of the Bologna Institute for Policy Research and assistant professor of economics. “The program draws on all the strengths of Johns Hopkins SAIS, including its research-active faculty, outstanding career services, and international alumni network.”

Students in the Master of Arts in Global Risk program will learn from the school’s renowned faculty, including members that have been internationally recognized for their scholarship, experience, and quality of teaching. They are award-winning authors, diplomats, thinkers, and senior-ranking officials who are authorities on international economics and international relations and who have expertise in contemporary issues concerning Africa, Asia, Europe and Eurasia, Latin America, the Middle East, and North America.
