SAISLeads 2018

The week before the official start of the school year, Johns Hopkins SAIS hosted its annual SAISLeads retreat for second-year Master of Arts (MA) students who are interested in pursuing leadership roles within the field of international relations. This year, 40 students participated in the two-day retreat designed to help students develop and hone their leadership skills.

During the retreat, students explored the individual leadership styles and preferences that would best support their personal and professional goals. They learned the importance of trust as it relates to leadership and participated in hands-on activities to explore traits of effective leadership. As they worked to develop and hone their own personal leadership style, they heard from alumnae Marsha McGraw Olive ’83 and Beth Keck ’84 on lessons on leadership learned respectively during a career in multilateral and nonprofit sectors for Marsha McGraw Olive and during a career in public and private sector for Beth Keck, who told the students, “you don’t need mentorship, you need sponsorship’.
