Building Community at Johns Hopkins SAIS
Cristina Valdez Pineda
MA, ’17
International Economics
Home Country: Dominican Republic
Cristina chose to attend Johns Hopkins SAIS because out of all the elite International Affairs schools, it had the widest variety of concentrations as well as an intensive economics component. This aligned perfectly with Cristina’s post-undergraduate goals to strengthen her quantitative skills and combine two career tracks – international finance with international law and human rights.
At Johns Hopkins SAIS, Cristina decided to run for the Social Programming Chair position of the student government association after observing the large impact the organization had on developing a student community and voicing student concerns to the administration. She thought the position was perfect for her based on her previous background in events planning and personal interest in improving the social experience at the school. As the Social Chair, Cristina’s goal is to make Johns Hopkins SAIS a fun and engaging place for all students – where they can make friendships and connections that will last them for life! This year, she is looking forward to the Cherry Blossom Ball and the Mr. and Ms. SAIS competition which will both occur in the spring. Cristina really enjoyed last year’s competition with organized group dances, instrumental performances and stand up acts. She also thought the Ball was a great opportunity to get dressed up and have a wonderful night at a classy DC venue – a perfect event to wrap up spring term!
After graduation, Cristina will be working for Ernst and Young LLP in New York City as an Economic Transfer Pricing Consultant.
