Developing Expertise in Global Energy

Latin American Studies
MA ’19
As an undergraduate student studying environmental economics and public policy, Kevin’s career goal became focused on bringing renewables to public transportation in emerging market countries. A firm believer in the need for an economic lens to better comprehend and make a positive impact on society, Kevin felt that Johns Hopkins SAIS’ economic focus, together with its proximity to embassies of developing nations, made it a top choice for advancing his academic credentials.
Among Kevin’s out-of-classroom experiences at Johns Hopkins SAIS was his leadership role in bringing together students and alumni to discuss critical issues in global energy and infrastructure as he hosted the 2018 Infrastructure Conference with the sponsorship of the Energy, Resources and Environment and International Economics departments, and the Environment and Energy Club. He also participated in a study trip to Buenos Aires that was organized by the Latin American Studies Program (LASP) and aimed at evaluating the progress of the Mauricio Macri government and prospects for the 2019 general election in Argentina. The trip was engaging and comprehensive, and Kevin felt it to be a truly eye-opening experience to learn so much about the country in such a short amount of time.
This summer, Kevin will continue to evaluate Latin America as a global player while working at the Chilean Ministry of Energy as part of his LASP capstone internship. He will be working specifically on transportation projects at the energy efficiency division, looking into the recent initiatives to meet the goal of increasing the share of electric vehicles and helping to design appropriate policies.
After he graduates, Kevin hopes to work in the infrastructure finance sector with a long-term goal of bringing clean energy to public transportation through a working partnership between public and private sectors.
