Ms. Karen Mathiasen is the Acting World Bank Executive Director for the United States. Prior to this, she served as a Senior Advisor in the USED’s office, where she led engagement on gender issues. She has held several positions at the US Treasury Department, including Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Development Policy, Director, Office of Multilateral Development Banks (2008-2014), Director, Office of the Middle East and North Africa (2005-2008), Senior Economist, Iraq Financial Task Force (2002-2003), Director, Office of Central and Southeastern Europe (2000-2002) and Director, Office of Middle East, Central and South Asia (1997-1997).
She holds a Masters in Law and Diplomacy from Tufts University, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and a BA in Economics and Political Science from Smith College.
This course introduces students to major economic and political dimensions of international development. The course is intended to familiarize students with the international development architecture and key international guiding principles as set out in the Sustainable Development Goals. Students will also learn about trends and perspectives on poverty and inequality, with a deep dive on gender. Finally, the course will introduce students to growth diagnostics and the debate surrounding aid effectiveness.
