JHU SAIS Names New Director of Europe Campus in Bologna

Washington, D.C. – January 10, 2014 – The Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) has named Michael George Plummer as the Director of SAIS Europe, in Bologna, Italy, effective August 1, 2014. Professor Plummer, a 1982 SAIS graduate has been the Eni Chair of International Economics since 2008, a position he will continue to hold.

As the director, Plummer will be responsible for the management of the center’s affairs, and will provide academic and administrative leadership to SAIS Europe as it continues to expand its reach across Europe and neighboring regions.

Professor Plummer, a distinguished economist, is known for his work in both academia and policy-making circles. Between 2010 and 2012 he served as the Head of the Development Division at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Prior to joining SAIS, Professor Plummer was an associate professor at Brandeis University, where he also served as Director of the M.A. Programs at the university’s Graduate School of International Economics and Finance, now known as the International Business School. He has also been research associate professor at the Research Institute for Economics and Business Administration at Kobe University in Japan.

In his more than 30 years of experience in academia, Plummer has received numerous awards and fellowships, has authored and co-authored many books and journal articles, and has led several international studies for the ASEAN economic community. Among his professional activities, Plummer is currently editor-in-chief of the Journal of Asian Economics, president of the American Committee for Asian Economic Studies and a non-resident senior fellow at the East-West Center.

Plummer received a B.A. in Economics and a B.A. in French from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1980, an M.A. in Economics from Michigan State University in 1984, a postgraduate diploma from SAIS, and a Ph.D. in Economics from Michigan State University in 1988.

SAIS is one of the country’s leading graduate schools devoted to the study of international relations. SAIS Europe is a premier center of research and higher education in international affairs in the heart of Europe. Established in 1955 as the Bologna Center, SAIS Europe today enrolls approximately 200 graduate students each year, about half of all students who enter the SAIS M.A. program.  With a core of resident faculty and adjunct faculty drawn from Europe’s major universities, as well as its proximity to the capitals of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, SAIS Europe offers students a unique exposure to contrasting European and U.S. perspectives on global issues.
