The Johns Hopkins SAIS Women's Leadership Initiative was announced December 17 with Barbara Barrett, Chairman of the Aerospace Corporation and former United States Ambassador to Finland and who served as the inaugural speaker for the "Women Who Inspire" lecture series.
Dean Vali Nasr introduced the lecture series and the Women's Leadership Initiative as parts of the larger effort at Johns Hopkins SAIS to underscore the role women play in leadership positions in the United States and across the world. Throughout its history, Johns Hopkins SAIS has developed generations of women who are shaping our world, Dean Nasr, explained, and as societal change continues to open more opportunities for women to lead worldwide, our institution will be involved in the conversation about how to support and develop strong female leaders.
Barbara Barrett shared examples of the women in her life and career who have inspired her to be a leader, including Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman justice appointed to the US Supreme Court; Kim Campbell, diplomat, lawyer, and the first female Canadian Prime Minister; and Ana Palacio, lawyer, member of the European Parliament and Spain's minister of foreign affairs.
