Class of 1995

Reunion Week 2020

Your 25th reunion committee:

25th reunion campaign: We are inviting everyone in our class to consider making a gift to Johns Hopkins SAIS. We have set a goal to raise $75,000 for the school in honor of the 25th anniversary of our graduation. Whether or not you are able to celebrate with us virtually this fall, we hope you are able to make a contribution, of whatever size! Please consider directing your support to the School’s greatest needs – fellowships and experiential learning. Every $2,500 raised for the Class of 1995 Summer Internship Fund will provide a student with a stipend and access to a career-defining, and often unpaid, internship. For those interested in supporting diversity and inclusion at SAIS, consider a gift to the Propel Fellowship, which provides financial aid awards to students in underrepresented populations. The 25th anniversary of our graduation is a time to celebrate and to reflect on what SAIS meant to us. Please join us in giving back. Thank you in advance for your support!

Hi Everyone,

After graduating from SAIS and spending a few months in Ecuador, I ended up sleeping on my friend's apartment floor in DC and working for a small consulting firm called Mathis & Associates. I had no idea what I was doing but ended up working for telecom and IT clients. After a few years, I decided to get an MBA and ended up at UC Berkeley.

Since then, I've lived mostly on the West Coast in Seattle up in the Great Northwest. My wife and I love the outdoors and enjoy mountain biking, snowboarding, hiking and camping. I've had a diverse professional career with roles in strategy, marketing, general management and, more recently, product management. I'm currently at Amazon trying to get Alexa to work on smartphones. Looking forward to catching up with everyone.

Cheers,

Adrian

Head, thought leadership, Global Policy, Visa Inc
LinkedIn Profile

Shortly before graduating from SAIS, I took Professor Max Corden's advice and applied to a research assistant position at the Institute for International Economics, a think tank in Dupont Circle. For some reason they hired me, so I stayed in DC to work at the IIE on international trade policy. From there i went to the Organization of American States (OAS) where I led a team of coders, lawyers and economists working on the Free Trade Area of the Americas negotiations. I returned to the now-Peterson Institute for International Economics for nearly a decade, then joined many SAISers in working at the World Bank, where i focused on Investment Policy and spend three years mostly traveling in Africa. I then moved to the private sector and am now at Visa heading the global policy group's thought leadership team. I take my LASP training very seriously: I have 3 half-Mexican children and a Puerto Rican dog, and since 1998 have been a Professor in Georgetown's Center for Latin American Studies and IBD program (but please don't hold that against me - SAIS rules!). I was really happy to be able to co-author a paper with fellow-SAISer Jo-Ann Crawford, but hope to reconnect with other SAISers without having to interpret a bunch of international investment agreements!

After spending 15 of the last 18 years in Asia -- mostly in China (Beijing/Shanghai), a bit in Southeast Asia -- I'm now living/working in the Boston area. I've been in some form of corporate strategic planning (Sprint) or management consulting (KPMG) since graduating from SAIS. Recently, I focus exclusively on serving life sciences clients. We help large pharma and biotech companies to grow and optimize, and new (startup) companies to find access to capital and prepare for listings via IPO. I've stayed pretty closely involved with SAIS through participation in the Hopkins Nanjing Advisory Council (supporting the Hopkins Nanjing Center) and various programs with the JHU in Homewood. At KPMG, we continue to recruit from JHU/SAIS as heavily as we can. I live in Brookline with my wife and three children and am always happy to hear from SAISers. Don't hesitate to get in touch to talk through an idea or simply reconnect.

Eric Duflos

Senior Financial Sector Specialist, CGAP
LinkedIn Profile

The microfinance class that I took with Beth Rhyne at SAIS in 1995 had major consequences on my career. Right out of school I spent seven years in the Lao P.D.R. working on microfinance with UNCDF and the World Bank. I then moved to Paris where I met my husband and worked for CGAP, a global financial inclusion think-tank housed at the World Bank. We then took off for five years in Singapore where I played a regional role for CGAP. My career has mostly consisted in finding solutions to help low income segments use financial services responsibly, often through digital technology. I have also done some teaching on this topic in several universities. In 2016 I took a four year assignment out of NYC to support Her Majesty Queen Maxima of the Netherlands in her UN inclusive finance role - a unique and fulfilling parenthesis. After 25 years outside of D.C. I have recently moved back to the city with my husband, our two Singaporean cats, and still with CGAP, this time leading our work on consumer protection in finance. I am super excited to be here after these diverse professional experiences.

Glenn Manoff
Chief Communications and Brand Officer, Trustpilot
LinkedIn Profile

I've been in London since SAIS, working first as a journalist and then a second longer career in business with a brief stint in the middle building a charity championing young people's digital rights. All my roles have been in technology, first in telecoms/ISP and now in eCommerce with Trustpilot. I focus on Communications, Sustainability, Brand and Policy and enjoy it. If you knew me back in 1995 you'll remember Maggie too. We're still together, 33 years strong. Our daughter Ella is a fresher at Edinburgh and our son Max is doing his A-levels. Happy to say all are healthy and well.

Laurie Blank
Clinical Professor of Law, Emory University School of Law
LinkedIn Profile

I teach at Emory Law School where I direct the International Humanitarian Law Clinic, working directly with students to provide assistance to international tribunals, non-governmental organizations and militaries around the world on the law of armed conflict, human rights law, international criminal law and national security law.

My husband Jonathan and I have three kids and three dogs and we've been in Atlanta for 18 years. Looking forward to catching up with everyone!
