Reunion Weekend 2018

We are excited to add Austin, TX as our newest Johns Hopkins SAIS alumni community with approximately 70 alumni residing in the metropolitan area. We are taking first steps to engage this community and bring programming to the area. If you are interested in lending support to this effort or have suggestions for the types of events and outreach you would be interested in seeing, please reach out to our volunteer leader. We look forward to getting you involved!

The SAIS Boston Alumni Club launched January 2009 with a talk by scholar Azar Nafisi hosted by Diane and Bob Hildreth '75. The gathering assembled some 50 SAIS alumni to hear about Nafisi's book, Things I've Been Silent About. The Club has since hosted numerous SAIS faculty members for discussions and book launches as well as informal happy hours.

Boston: Happy Hour
Wednesday, May 29, 2024 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm
The SAIS Boston Alumni Club invited fellow alumni to join them for Happy Hour on May 29, 2024, at the ZaZi Bar. This was a great opportunity to connect with other alumni in the Boston area. Club leader Geetha Rao '98 was there to welcome guests.

Chicago: US Mid-Term Election Happy Hour 
Tuesday, November 6 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Blue Wave? New NAFTA? A Wall? Alumni got together with fellow alumni to watch the mid-term election returns and found out what the next two years have in store at Blue Agave, 1050 N State Street. This event was also in celebration of the Johns Hopkins SAIS 75th Anniversary. Neil Bouhan B’10, ’10 was there to welcome guests.

Chicago: Picnic Dinner 
Sunday, July 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. 
Alumni gathered for picnic food and fun at Gillson Park in Wilmette at Lake Avenue and Sheridan Road (picnic area #6). Attendees were encouraged to bring their own meat to grill and a dish to share. Extras (drinks, paper goods, ketchup, s'mores ingredients, etc.) were provided. Dress was casual for this expected beautiful day by the lake and large picnic area and family members were welcome! Jennifer Lind B’91, ’92 and Neil Bouhan B’10, ’10 were there to welcome guests. 



Chicago: Happy Hour Reception with Dean Vali Nasr
Tuesday, April 3 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Alumni gathered for a happy hour reception with fellow alumni, newly admitted students, and Johns Hopkins SAIS Dean Vali Nasr who shared a brief update on the school. The event took place at Three Dots and Dash, 435 N Clark Street (enter the basement through the alley in the back of the building). Valet parking was available at Bub City at 435 N Clark and Il Porcellino at 59 W Hubbard. Appetizers were served with a cash bar. Neil Bouhan B’10, ’10 was there to welcome guests.

The Colorado SAIS Alumni organized a cocktail gathering on June 18th to welcome Anna Lemberger, SAIS Associate Director of Constituent Engagement, Development, & Alumni Relations, and Ava Jones, Associate Director of Development to Denver. The informational, appetizers and pay-as-you-go cocktail bar event was held in the Aspen Patio of the Toro Latin Kitchen in the Hotel Clio in Cherry Creek from 5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m.

Houston: Morning Book Talk with Professor Emeritus Michael Mandelbaum
Tuesday, April 23 from 8 to 9 a.m.
Alumni enjoyed meeting for early morning coffee and tea with fellow alumni and Michael Mandelbaum, Professor Emeritus, who commented and led a discussion on his newly published book, The Rise and Fall of Peace on Earth at Pondicheri, 2800 Kirby Drive, Bake Lab 2nd Floor. Houston: 2019 Energy Trek Happy Hour
Thursday, January 24 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
SAIS alumni, friends, and current students from the Energy and Environment Club (EEC) got together for a happy hour in celebration of the 2019 Houston Energy Career Trek at the residence of Kristof Abbeloos ’04. This event was sponsored by the EEC, SAIS Global Careers, and the Houston SAIS alumni network at the residence of Kristof Abbeloos ’04. Food and beverages were served. Houston: Johns Hopkins SAIS’ 75th Anniversary With Dean Nasr at Asia Society Texas Center
Thursday, January 17 from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m.
SAIS alumni gathered in celebration of Johns Hopkins SAIS and its 75th Anniversary with a special evening program in partnership with Asia Society Texas Center featuring Dean Vali Nasr who engaged the audience in a lively discussion on “US-Iran Relations after the Nuclear Deal,” moderated by Dr. F. Gregory Gause, III, professor and John H. Lindsey ‘ 44 Chair in international affairs at the Bush School of Government and Public Service, Texas A&M University, and head of School’s International Affairs Department. Prior to the program there will be a reception for alumni and other guests. This signature gathering took place at Asia Society Texas Center, 1370 Southmore Boulevard. Caroline Allison ’01, Bruce Campbell ’99, Beverly Barrett B’00, ’01, and Laura McWilliams ’78, Johns Hopkins SAIS Houston Club Leaders and 75th Anniversary Advisors, was there to greet guests. We thank Bruce Campbell ’99 for his generosity in subsidizing costs for alumni at this event. 




Houston: Professor Johannes Urpelainen Book Dialogue and Reception
Thursday, April 26 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Alumni gathered with one another, newly admitted students, and Johannes Urpelainen, Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Professor of Energy, Resources and Environment, who led a discussion on his newly published book, “Renewables: The Politics of a Global Energy Transition.” We thank Laura McWilliams generously hosting this event at her home in Afton Oaks. Appetizers and refreshments were served. \

Los Angeles: Johns Hopkins SAIS 75th Anniversary Celebration
Thursday, February 21 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Dean Vali Nasr and fellow alumni gathered in celebration of Johns Hopkins SAIS and its 75th Anniversary with a special evening program featuring Andrew Mertha, Director of the China Studies Program, David Bulman, Assistant Professor of International Affairs and China Studies, Director of the Pacific Community Initiative, and Thomas Rid, Professor of Strategic Studies, who engaged the audience in a panel discussion on “The US and China at a Turning Point: Trade, Tech, and the Trump Administration.” This signature gathering took place on Manhattan Beach at the home of Robert Abernethy ’62, Johns Hopkins SAIS Board of Advisors Member, who graciously offered to be the event host. David Karl B’88, ’89, Stephen Chien ’06, Bruce Comer ’97, Jennifer Cano B’89, ’90, and Anjali Sharan ’09, Johns Hopkins SAIS Los Angeles Club Leaders and 75th Anniversary Advisors, were there to greet guests.

The SAIS New York Alumni Club is one of the largest and most active groups of alumni around the globe. With over 400 members, this club gets together routinely for alumni, student, faculty, and affinity social and networking events. New York: Energy, Resources, and Environment Gathering With Professor Urpelainen
Tuesday, February 19 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
In celebration of Johns Hopkins SAIS’s 75th Anniversary, alumni working in the energy sector in the New York area and the Energy, Resources, and Environment Program got together for an afternoon gathering with Johannes Urpelainen, Director and Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Professor of Energy, Resources and Environment, and Founding Director, Initiative for Sustainable Energy Policy (ISEP). The meeting was hosted by and located at Citi, at 153 E 53rd Street. Ed Morse ’66, Eric Lee ’11, Bruce Schlein ’96, and Harrison Moskowitz ‘12 was there to greet guests. 

New York: Celebrating Johns Hopkins SAIS and Its 75th Anniversary
Friday, January 25 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Dean Vali Nasr and fellow alumni gathered in celebration of Johns Hopkins SAIS and its 75th Anniversary with a special evening program featuring Christopher Sands '94, Ph.D.'09, Senior Research Professor, Director of the Center for Canadian Studies, and Francisco González, Senior Associate Professor of International Political Economy - Latin America, who will engage the audience in a panel discussion on “The Future of North America: Preliminary Estimates of the Trump Effects,” moderated by Dean Vali Nasr. This signature gathering took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 5th Avenue. Cost was $100. Sam Lee ’13, Valerie Gadala-Maria ’13, Arthur Rubin ’92, and Kate Maloney ’02, Johns Hopkins SAIS New York Club Leaders and 75th Anniversary Advisors Member, was there to greet guests. New York: SWAN New Year’s Networking
Tuesday, January 8 from 7 to 9 p.m.
The SAIS Women's Alumni Network New York hub (SWAN NYC) hosted a New Year's Networking event where alums could make good on those New Year's resolutions to reboot their careers and chart a new path. The evening presented a fun and interactive opportunity for alums to connect meaningfully through focused conversations that go beyond traditional networking at the New York Film Academy, 17 Battery Place, New York (doors open at 6:45). New York: Holiday Party
Thursday, December 6 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Alumni met up with friends, classmates and fellow SAISers at their annual holiday party co-hosted by the SAIS New York Alumni Club, SAIS Women’s Alumni Network, and Amici di Bologna. This has historically been their biggest event of the year and a good time was had by all! This event took place at The Seymour, 261 W 25th Street. 

New York: SWAN Skills Session – Building Your Network
Monday, December 3 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The SAIS Women’s Alumni Network (SWAN) New York hub invited alumni to strengthen their networking skills at “Building Your Network: Transforming Associates Into Trusted Allies.” Alumni learned from a panel of Johns Hopkins SAIS alumnae about how they successfully build, use and strengthen their networks during this event held at the NY Film Academy, 17 Battery Place. Light refreshments were served. 

New York: Post US Mid-Term Elections: Journalists in the Spotlight
Tuesday, November 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The SAIS New York Alumni Club (SNYAC) invited fellow alumni to participate in an evening of lively dialogue on “Journalists in the Spotlight: A Review of the US Midterm Elections and the State of Journalism in Contemporary America.” Panelist speakers Landon Thomas Jr. ’91, Reporter, New York Times, and Tim Naftali ’87, Presidential Historian, CNN, will offer insights from their expertise as leaders in the world of media in a discussion moderated by Jen Reingold ’92, Former Editor-at-large, Fortune Magazine. This event took place at Morgan Stanley, 522 Fifth Avenue, 7th Floor Auditorium. Arthur Rubin ’92, Elizabeth Madigan Jost B’97, ’98, Valerie Gadala-Maria ’13 and Sam Lee ’13 were there to greet guests. 

New York: The Future of Finance
Wednesday, October 17 from 6 to 8:30 pm
Alumni gathered for an evening of lively conversation with a panel discussion on “The Future of Finance - The Implications of Blockchain and How to Join the Emerging Tech Revolution” with panelists Alisa DiCaprio ’99, Head of Global Trade Strategy & Research; Jed Talvacchia ’13, Director, Corporate Development, R3; Katherine Pinkard JHU Carey ’14, President, Pinkard Propoerties; and, Jim Kyung-Soo Liew, PhD, Assistant Professor, JHU Carey Business School. The financial services industry is at the cusp of disruption. As newer and more agile fintechs emerge and the Amazons and Alibabas of the world enter, established financial institutions are placing unprecedented focus on leveraging emerging technologies to ensure a competitive edge. Blockchain technology has been placed at the forefront of this disruption. The SAIS NY Alumni Club and the Carey Business School Alumni Club invited guests to explore real life implications for Blockchain, as well as career opportunities to pursue. The event took place at R3, 11 W 42nd Street. 

New York: Amici di Bologna              
Saturday, October 6, from 4:30 to 9 p.m.
Amici di Bologna 2018 returned to New York City on October 6th! Johns Hopkins University SAIS alumni and friends were invited to join Amici di Bologna in New York City for the 11th Annual Symposium and Celebration. The event returned for the third time to the UN Delegates Dining Room, 1 United Nations Plaza, boasting one of the largest outdoor patios in Manhattan and breathtaking views of the East River. The event featured their traditional academic symposium with distinguished Johns Hopkins SAIS faculty, policy practitioners, and representatives from the private sector, a networking reception on the terrace, a gourmet 3-course plated dinner with open seating and an after-party at a NYC venue. The 11th edition of Amici di Bologna was the first of many signature events in a year of particularly special alumni engagement as JHU SAIS celebrates its 75th anniversary.

New York: Summer Happy Hour at Hurley’s 
Wednesday, June 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The SAIS New York Alumni Club invited alumni, current students working at summer internships, and prospective students to a summer happy hour at Hurley’s Saloon, 232 W. 48th Street. Sam Lee ’13 and Valerie Gadala-Maria ’13 were there to greet guests. 

New York: Fireside Chat with Professor Riordan Roett
Wednesday, May 30 from 6 to 8 p.m.
In a year that will see presidential elections in Brazil, Colombia and Mexico, the Summit of the Americas and the first-ever G-20 summit in South America, alumni joined Professor Riordan Roett, Professor and Director of the Latin American Studies Program, for his final official alumni gathering, as he reflected on his 45 years as a leading scholar of Latin American politics and economics. He discussed changes he had observed through the years and offered insights into the future of this dynamic region. Through personal friendships with presidents and foreign ministers, Professor Roett has had a front-row seat to the region's dramatic ups-and-downs, from debt crises to commodity booms, socialist experiments to neoliberal swings, dictatorships to democratic transitions. The event took place at Morgan Stanley, 1585 Broadway between 47th + 48th Streets, 6th Floor Auditorium, New York, NY. Light Refreshments were served from 6 to 6:45 p.m., with remarks immediately following. 

New York: Politics of Global Energy and Renewables 
Thursday, April 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Alumni engaged in lively dialogue over drinks and appetizers with Johannes Urpelainen, Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Professor of Energy, Resources and Environment, who led a talk about his new book, Renewables: The Politics of a Global Energy Transition. Bruce Schlein ’96 moderated the discussion at KPMG, 37th Floor, 345 Park Avenue (between 51st and 52nd Street). Appetizers and beverages were served. Valerie Gadala-Maria ’13 was there to welcome guests. 



 
New York: Alumni-Student Cocktails and Conversation  

Monday, March 19 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The SAIS New York Alumni Club and SAIS Women Alumni Network (SWAN) welcomed students from the ILAW and SAIS Women Lead programs visiting the United Nations. Valerie Gadala-Maria ’13, Sam Lee ’13, and Sarah McGrath ’13 were there to greet guests for cocktails and conversation at Lily’s Bar in the Roger Smith Hotel (501 Lexington Ave). 



New York: Book Discussion with Will Bardenwerper ’10 
Thursday, February 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. 
The SAIS New York Alumni Club gathered for an evening of interesting dialogue with Will Bardenwerper ’10 who led a discussion on his new book, “The Prisoner in His Palace," recently included in both the NY Post and Military Times lists of Best Books of 2017. The author explored the journey of twelve young American soldiers who in the summer of 2006 had to guard Iraq's notorious leader in the months leading to his execution, as well as an intimate portrait of two Saddam’s co-existing in one person: the defiant tyrant who uses torture and murder as tools, and a shrewd but contemplative prisoner in the face of looming death. The book discussion took place at Thomson Reuters, 3 Times Square, 7F, Empire Room. Sam Lee ’13 was there to welcome guests.



New York: SAIS New York Alumni Holiday Party
Thursday, December 7 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Alumni came to meet with friends, classmates and fellow SAIS alums at their annual holiday party co-hosted by the SAIS New York Alumni Club, SAIS Women’s Alumni Network, and Amici di Bologna. They've had a great turnout at their holiday parties the last several years and this one took place at the Caroline, 60 West 23rd Street. 

New York: 2nd Annual SAIS Women Alumni Network (SWAN) Documentary Film Forum: Afghanistan and 'What Tomorrow Brings'

Alumni joined the SAIS Women's Alumni Network (SWAN) for a special evening focused on one complex country, Afghanistan, from two distinct perspectives. Sarah Sewall, Speyer Family Foundation Distinguished Scholar at the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs, provided expert insights about the thorny national security questions facing foreign governments and international NGOs. Beth Murphy, award-winning filmmaker from the Ground Truth Project, provided first-hand reflections from her latest documentary, What Tomorrow Brings, which tells an incredible story of a girl’s school in rural Afghanistan and the lives that it touches. This event took place at The New York Film Academy, 17 Battery Place.

The SAIS New York Alumni Club invited alumni, current students working at summer internships, and prospective students to a summer happy hour at Hurley’s Saloon, 232 W. 48th Street. Sam Lee ’13 and Valerie Gadala-Maria ’13 were there to greet guests. 

New York: Alumni Panel on "The Future of US-Russia Relations"
Wednesday, May 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The SAIS New York Alumni Club invited guests to an alumni panel discussion moderated by J.P. Natkin '91, Partner at Macro-Advisory Ltd., on "The Future of US-Russia Relations."  Panelists include: Ed Morse JHU '63, B'66, '66, Global Head of Commodities Research at Citigroup; Matthew Rojansky, Director of the Kennan Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center; and Christopher Weafer, Senior Partner at Macro-Advisory Ltd. This event took place at Citigroup, 153 E 53rd Street. 

New York: NY Alumni Club - Cultural Heritage Preservation: The Museum Perspective
Tuesday, May 2 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The SAIS NY Alumni Club got together with the Ancient Near East department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum to discuss the cultural heritage preservation and the impact that museums, cultural institutions, and the individual can have on the preservation of world heritages. The event was hosted by Elizabeth Madigan Jost B'97, '98 at Morgan Stanley, located at 1585 Broadway. 

New York: Happy Hour with Alumni and Newly Admitted SAIS Students
Thursday, March 16 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. 
Fellow alumni gathered with newly admitted students at Bobby Vans Steakhouse, 135 West 50th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues). Alumni were happy to talk about their SAIS experience and answer questions for our newly admitted students. Mike De Lucia B '94, '95 was there to greet guests. 

New York: Book Signing with Professor Eliot Cohen and discussion on The Big Stick
Tuesday, March 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The SAIS New York Alumni Club invited alumni to an evening with Eliot Cohen, director of the SAIS Strategic Studies Program, former counselor of the U.S. Department of State, and political commentator with articles in recent scholarly and popular journals such as The Atlantic, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. He discussed The Big Stick: The Limits of Soft Power & the Necessity of Military Force, which was available for sale. Guests gathered for a 6:30 p.m. reception and book signing and 7 p.m. discussion at Credit Suisse, Eleven Madison Avenue. 


New York: SAIS SWAN NY Storytelling Practicum
Tuesday, February 28 from 6 to 8 p.m.
SAISers gathered for the second in a two-part series on a topic that is close to many SAISers - how travel has impacted our careers - as well as the art of storytelling. The ability to effectively tell a story is a crucial skill in a number of personal and professional contexts. This was a hands-on practicum, facilitated by award winning storyteller Cyndi Freeman whose experience includes eight years working as a lead instructor for THE MOTH Community Program. Attendees had a chance to receive personalized instruction and learn how to effectively tell their own stories.

Dean Vali Nasr and fellow alumni gathered in celebration of Johns Hopkins SAIS and its 75th Anniversary with a special evening program featuring Andrew Mertha, Director of the China Studies Program, David Bulman, Assistant Professor of International Affairs and China Studies, Director of the Pacific Community Initiative, and Thomas Rid, Professor of Strategic Studies, who engaged the audience in a panel discussion on “The US and China at a Turning Point: Trade, Tech, and the Trump Administration.” This signature gathering took place at Hotel Nikko SF, 222 Mason Street. Sibyl Chen B’03, ’04, Johns Hopkins SAIS SF/Bay Area Club Leader and 75th Anniversary Advisor, was there to greet guests. 




SF/Bay Area: Politics of Global Energy and Renewables 
Thursday, September 13 from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
In celebration of the Johns Hopkins SAIS 75th anniversary, alumni engaged in a lively dialogue with Johannes Urpelainen, Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Professor of Energy, Resources and Environment, who led a discussion on his newly published book, “Renewables: The Politics of a Global Energy Transition.” In his talk, offered a comprehensive analysis of the rapid growth in renewable wind and solar power and examine the pioneering efforts in the U.S., Germany, and Denmark in the past few decades, and described why the U.S. surrendered its leadership role while China has played an increasing leadership role in renewable energy. Among other things, Professor Urpelainen explained the return of wind and solar in the U.S. The event took place at the Handlery Union Square Hotel, 351 Geary Street. Appetizers were served. Devon Swezey B'13, '14 was there to welcome guests.

Mellon Professor of International Relations, and Christopher Sands, Senior Research Professor, Director of the Center for Canadian Studies, who engaged the audience in a panel discussion on “Donald Trump and the Forgotten Partnership between Canada and the United States: Abnormal, or the New Normal?,” moderated by Deanna Horton B’79. Washington, DC is our largest SAIS alumni community with over four thousand residing in the metropolitan area. Alumni have self-organized into clusters where natural bonds have formed. Washington, DC: SWAN's 2019 International Women's Day Celebration
Tuesday, March 5 from 5:45 to 8:45 p.m.
In celebration of International Women's Day, the SAIS Women's Alumni Network (SWAN) and SAIS’s Global Women in Leadership (GWL) student organization invited alumni to join for a 5:45pm screening of Wave Goodbye to Dinosaurs in Rome Auditorium. The happy hour-style reception followed the film at 7:30pm at the Beacon Bar and Grill, 1615 Rhode Island Ave NW. The film told the story of the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition and their role in the historic peace talks that led to the Good Friday Agreement. Carmen Suro-Bredie '72, who coached the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition, shared her insights with guests at the film’s conclusion. After her remarks, guests headed to the Beacon Bar and Grill to continue the discussion, meet fellow SWAN members, and celebrate women's successes.'

The SAIS DC Women’s Alumni Network (SWAN) invited alumni to their fourth annual discussion featuring prominent SAIS women on today's foreign policy challenges. This year’s panel, focused on the Asia- Pacific region, included panelists: Susan Thornton ’91, former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs; Bonnie S. Glaser ’82, senior adviser for Asia and the director of the China Power Project at CSIS; and Orit Frenkel ’84, PhD ’88, CEO of Frenkel Strategies and formerly with GE and USTR.  A networking reception will be held before and after the panel discussion. This event, which celebrated the Johns Hopkins SAIS 75th Anniversary, was hosted by the Embassy of the Commonwealth of Australia, 1601 Massachusetts Ave, NW. Business attire. Registrations were limited to alumni plus one guest.

MIPP and MAGP alumni and MAGP students gathered for a joint-program social gathering at Capitol Cider House, 3930 Georgia Ave NW. These two programs provided complimentary appetizers and one round of drinks. The occasion also celebrated the 75th Anniversary of Johns Hopkins SAIS.

Each year, the school aims to achieve a community rich in diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and representation. As a result, the Development and Alumni Relations Office invited alumni of diverse backgrounds to attend a moderated roundtable discussion with university administrators on ways the school can better engage with and signal its support for diverse students and alumni. This timely gathering was part of the school’s 75thth Anniversary celebration. Alumni were also invited to a social gathering, held in advance of the moderated discussion, with prospective candidates from underrepresented backgrounds who were interested in learning more about the school. The events took place at Johns Hopkins SAIS, Rome Building, Rome Auditorium (Meet Prospective Candidates) and Room 806 (Roundtable Discussion with Alumni).

The SAIS Women’s Alumni Network (SWAN) invited alumni to strengthen their networking skills at a dynamic Networking Skills Workshop and panel discussion. Exercises were conducted to practice tactical skills to build and strengthen relationships to grow networks in the short-term and to successfully guide long-term career. Following the workshop, guests learned from a panel of Johns Hopkins SAIS alumni how they successfully build and strengthen their networks. This event took place in Kenney Auditorium.

Washington DC: SWAN Power Lunch with Lauri Fitz-Pegado '86
Thursday, April 19 from 12-1:30pm
The SAIS Women’s Alumni Network (SWAN) in DC invited alumni to connect with fellow SAIS alumnae at its second annual power lunch. They met with the Honorable Lauri Fitz-Pegado ’86, the only female partner at the Livingston Group, who discussed her career trajectory—from working as a foreign service officer to being named assistant secretary of commerce. Fitz-Pegado detailed how she became a leader in international trade and government relations and shared advice on how to build a successful career. The registration fee of $35 (or $25 before noon on April 12) included a salad, entrée, beverages, dessert and, most importantly, a great investment in alumni careers. The event took place at the Loft in The Hamilton Restaurant, 600 14th Street NW.

The SAIS Women’s Alumni Network (SWAN) in DC was pleased to invite alumni to a dynamic Body Language workshop and panel discussion. Dr. Irvine Nugent who specializes in helping leaders expand their emotional and nonverbal intelligence helped the audience master simple body language techniques and become more aware of how we communicate in our personal and professional interactions. Following the workshop, they drew on a panel of Johns Hopkins SAIS alumnae to share their experiences with nonverbal communication. The event took place in Kenney Auditorium.

The SAIS Women’s Alumni Network (SWAN) was pleased to invite alumni to a dynamic Body Language Workshop followed by a panel discussion in Kenney Auditorium. They were thrilled to have award-winning actress Stella Damasus kick off the skills workshop, where they learned how to master simple body language techniques and become more aware of how we communicate in our personal and professional interactions, whether we are engaged in networking, negotiations, speaking, and building relationships. Following, they drew on the experiences of various Johns Hopkins SAIS alumnae. The registration fee covered the costs of a dinner reception, which featured African cuisine (vegetarian and gluten-free options available). 

Washington, DC: Webinar with JHU Associate Professor Feilim Mac Gabhann on “Research Initiatives at JHU” 
Thursday, December 7 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Webinar Networking Sessions took place virtually with alumni across Johns Hopkins SAIS and JHU to connect and engage in dynamic and value-add opportunities. Alumni joined Dr. Mac Gabhann and other JHU alumni for a virtual conversation and exploration of research at the university. Dr. Mac Gabhann’s research focuses on systems pharmacology – the building of complex computational models to simulate a variety of therapies, including drugs, proteins, gene therapy, cell transplant, and even exercise; and as the Director of HOUR, facilitates more research opportunities for students through programs like PURA, STAR, and CIRCUIT.

Washington, DC: SWAN DC Urban Farming and Food Waste Policy Workshop 
Saturday, October 21 from 11 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
SWAN DC invited alumni to a special opportunity to learn about sustainable agricultural practices and experience ECO-City Farm, a thriving urban farm. The event included a guided tour of the main farm, a hands on vermi (worm) culture demonstration and a catered “zero-waste” lunch – featuring an expert panel including food-waste policy and composting experts, and public health economist Martha Ainsworth ’81; Brenda Platt, Co-Director, Institute for Self-Reliant Living (ISRL), ILSR's Composting for Community Project Leader; Susan Eisendrath, MPH, Master Gardener and co-Chair of the Montgomery County Food Council Environmental Impact Working Group; and Steven Birchfield, Field Operations Supervisor of PG County's Organic Compost Facility. The panel was moderated by Sarah Colon ’00. Following a tasty and informative lunch, guests had the opportunity to get their hands dirty by participating in a vermicomposting hands-on workshop led by Rodale Institute-trained vermicomposter Linda Norris-Waldt. Up to 10 attendees even had a chance to take home a composting bin! Catered lunch was provided by Green Plates catering. Dessert was donated by Lydia La Ferla ’86, a conscious cooking advocate and Special Program Director for Via Umbria, Georgetown. The event took place rain or shine at ECO City Farm, 4913 Crittenden Street, Hyattsville, MD.

The Classes of 1992 and 2007 celebrated their 25th and 10th reunions, respectively! They had an exciting schedule of events as part of this celebration on Friday, October 13, Saturday, October 14, and Sunday, October 15, 2017. In addition, they were encouraged to get in touch with friends about organizing additional activities during the weekend. A good time was had by all! 

Washington D.C.: Amici di Bologna 2017 – 10th Edition

Alumni gathered on Saturday, October 7, 2017 for the 10th annual Amici di Bologna event. This year, in celebration of Amici's 10th anniversary, we were pleased to present the first Amici di Bologna Austrian Ball in Washington, D.C., complete with traditional and contemporary dance music. The traditional symposium was on: "Populism and Foreign Policy" and will feature Johns Hopkins SAIS faculty Professor Christopher Hill, Wilson E. Schmidt Distinguished Professor, Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs and Professor Margaret MacMillan, Xerox Foundation Distinguished Scholar Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs, moderated by Professor Erik Jones, Director of European and Eurasian Studies, Professor of European Studies and International Political Economy. A networking cocktail reception, a buffet dinner and dance music followed the symposium. The event will took place at the Austrian Embassy (3524 International Court, NW, Washington, D.C., 20008).

SWAN DC hosted its inaugural Power Lunch featuring speaker Edith Quintrell '91 who discussed her experience at OPIC, the World Bank’s Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency’s Director of Operations, and at Liberty Specialty Market where she now serves as their US-based Underwriting Development Director for its Global Financial Risks division. This event took place at The Hamilton, 600 14th Street, NW.

Saturday, May 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Alumni, students, administration, and friends of the Johns Hopkins SAIS community gathered for a Johns Hopkins Day of Service at A Wider Circle. The mission of A Wider Circle is simple: to end poverty for one individual and one family after another. We work in partnership with those we serve and with those seeking to help to ensure that every child and adult has the chance to succeed and the opportunity to live well. Volunteers helped to sort donations and transport to the appropriate area of the showroom. Volunteers were on their feet sorting and transporting items from warehouse to showroom floor. Free parking was located next door at the elementary school. The Event took place at 9159 Brookville Road, Silver Spring, MD 20910.

Washington, DC: Annual Global Women in Leadership Conference: Securing a Sustainable Future: Women as Leaders in a Changing Climate
Friday, April 21 from 8:15 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. 
SAIS alumni gathered with alumnae panelists Virginia Gorsevski B’95, ’96, Sasha Gottlieb ’99, Virginia Volpe B’95, ’96, Lauren Burnhill B’82, JHU ’83, ’86 and Jacqueline Patterson JHU ’98, along with an amazing line-up of speakers, at the annual Global Women in Leadership Conference. The 2017 SAIS Global Women in Leadership Conference, Securing a Sustainable Future: Women as Leaders in a Changing Climate, provided a forum to examine the critical intersection between gender and climate change and discussed how societies can leverage women’s leadership to develop sustainable, adaptive solutions to climate-based challenges. The conference engaged participants through issue panels, leadership sessions, and networking opportunities. Guests gathered for this all-day conference at the Johns Hopkins SAIS Kenney Auditorium, followed by an evening reception at the Carnegie Institution for Science.

Johns Hopkins SAIS Europe alumni were invited to return to the school to welcome Johns Hopkins SAIS Europe Director Michael Plummer and to meet prospective students. Afterwards, there was a reception and an update on Johns Hopkins SAIS Europe at Bologna in Kenney Auditorium.

Alumni gathered for their 50th celebration Cosmos Club Dinner on April 5 and…more! This year marks the 50th anniversary of our graduation from SAIS in 1967. They spent  time together sharing our memories and renewing old friendships. Details of our reunion dinner, coffee with Professors Doran and Roett, the SAIS Legacy Circle Luncheon 50th medallion presentation and attending classes were the highlights of the two-day reunion. Robert Botjer, John Franklin, Henry Nau, Alan Platt and Bonnie Wilson were there to greet guests.

This conference has become a wonderful tradition for the Hopkins community—a dynamic and interactive day filled with learning, networking, inspiration and value on many different levels. Washington DC: SWAN DC Movie Screening & Director’s Talk – “Women of Maidan”
Thursday, March 16 from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
In honor of Women's History Month, SWAN and SAIS alumni gathered for a special movie screening of Women of Maidan, which tells the incredible story of the role Ukrainian women played in the 2013-2014 “Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity”. The film was followed by a discussion with the director, Olha Onyshko, who shared her experience and behind the scene stories of the powerful role women played. SWAN and the following SAIS programs: Conflict Management; European & Eurasian Studies; and American Foreign Policy & Global IR Theory helped organize this event, which took place in the SAIS Rome Auditorium.




Washington, DC: Inclusive Diplomacy Luncheon: Culture Change at the State Department
Monday, March 6 from 12 to 2 p.m.
In this second of two Inclusive Diplomacy Luncheon Seminars, we will built on our learning about inclusive leadership in diplomacy through engagement with current U.S. Department of State representatives who are working to advance inclusive policies and agendas around the globe. Our discussion on “Culture Change at the State Department: Inclusive Government Leaders Share Their Insights” touched on the work of advancing inclusion and equity for racial and ethnic minorities, LGBT rights, women’s empowerment, and international disability rights as well as programs to connect with new generations. We learned how this work is actually conceptualized and implemented, the extent of its impact and what the barriers may be. Throughout this session, we also gained insights into how Washington based inclusive leaders coordinate with U.S. embassies to bring about change at the global level. The Inclusive Diplomacy Luncheon Seminar was designed and moderated by SAIS Alumna Lora Berg ’84, JHU ’85 and Dr. Mischa Thompson, managed by Professor Kent Davis-Packard B’05, PhD ’10, and sponsored by SAIS Women Lead and the Global Theory and History Program. The event took place in SAIS Rome 806.
